YOSHINAGA

STANDING HOTEI AND KARAKO

webassets/Yoshinaga.jpg

Extraordinary ivory netsuke of a standing Hotei and Karako with the karako draped over Hotei's right shoulder apparently tickling his nipple with a stick.  Hotei is holding a fan in his right hand whilst contentedly looking at the the karako.  The back of the netsuke is superbly carved with Hotei's hand emerging from underneath Hotei's double robe with the karako perched securely over Hotei's left shoulder. The robes are detailed in typical Kyoto-style sumi-e.  The carving is signed "Yoshinaga" on the reverse in a rectangular reserve.  Kyoto.  Middle Edo period, late 18th century.  Height 6.5 cm.
